German Car Day – Sunday 26th March

Over 170 vehicles descended upon Perry Lakes Reserve in Floreat for German Car Day, for what was an amazing display of Germanic design and engineering.

Vehicles of all makes, shapes and sizes trundled through the gates, raising much-needed funds for Wheels For Hope, while Mother Nature did her best to resist a downpour.

Bystanders admired everything from 911s to W126s and E28s to R32s, devouring bratwurst dogs and enjoying the German-themed entertainment, whilst owners compared notes and checked out the friendly competition.

Many thanks to our sponsors, Mercure Sanctuary Golf Resort in Bunbury, MB Centre in Booragoon, and Da Vinci Ristorante Pizzeria in North Perth, for kindly donating raffle prizes for the day.

A mention must also go to our dedicated volunteers, who selflessly donated their time to assist in the event’s smooth operation.

Lastly, thank YOU for coming along to support the cause!

See you next year, Perth!

New Members’ Barbecue – Sunday 26th February

What a beautiful morning!

Stirk Park in Kalamunda really turned it on for our members, both new and old. In excess of 40 cars were in attendance and almost 80 members. Members enjoyed catching up with old friends after the summer break, and new members were welcomed into the fold over a barbecue breakfast.

The event took on a slightly different format this year, with members bringing their own delicacies to cook up on the barbecues provided. This went down extremely well and was evident by the variety of food members brought along to cook!

October Club Meeting at Mean Machines

Our first meeting at Mean Machines kicked off a new era for the club, moving us into a facility that was built to host clubs just like ours.

Vice-President Peter Tuck took the reigns, to welcome members and host proceedings for the evening. Horacio from Mean Machines gave a brief intro to company and new Megastar editor Jim Green outlined his strategy and vision for the magazine, stressing that its success relies upon input from the members.

Members enjoyed the delicious coffee on hand at Mean Machines, and several even savoured some delights from the food menu. We can’t wait for our next visit!

2016 Weekend Away

As Perth endured another wet weekend, MBCCWA members and their partners flocked to Midland on Saturday morning, preparing to fly north for this year’s Weekend Away to Dongara.

The ensuing 30 hours created a memorable experience for all 29 attendees, with great cars, winding roads, and beautiful scenery becoming key ingredients of yet another successful MBCCWA Weekend Away event. (Good company and lovely food and coffee didn’t hurt, either!)

Many thanks to Pam Van Dam for organising this great weekender for members. We’re already counting the days until the next!

2016 Annual General Meeting

Twenty-eight people attended the The Vic, Subiaco, on Friday night, for what was a very special and memorable Annual General Meeting of 2016.

Club President Trent Chellingworth welcomed members and their guests, before commencing proceedings with his report on the year’s operations and notable achievements.

Events Co-ordinator Natasha Hunt soon took the mic, providing a run-down on the year’s events and announcing Mean Machines Australia as the club’s all-new venue for future meetings.

It was then time for Membership Secretary and outgoing Vice President George Kopsen to address the group, delivering the Treasurer’s report. Some figures regarding the club’s burgeoning membership were also given, with attendees learning that MBCCWA’s membership numbers and renewals have never been stronger!

Natasha returned to the podium to then announce the winner of the Club Member of the Year award, which was convincingly won for the second year in a row by George Kopsen. His efforts throughout the year were on display for all members to see and he’s a thoroughly deserving winner.

Upon the committee being dissolved, the following positions were elected by members in attendance:

Club President: Trent Chellingworth
Vice President: Peter Tuck
Secretary: Danny Della Posta
Treasurer: Matthew Hicks
Editor: Jim Green

Over the course of the evening, several changes to the club’s constitution and fee structure were also proposed and passed by majority vote.

The night also marked the end of an era for two-time former Club President Paul Blank, who has served on the committee for a total of 14 years, and decided to take a well-earned rest. Many thanks to Paul for his many years of dedicated service!

Lastly, thank you to the members who attended and contributed in shaping MBCCWA’s future. If you missed the AGM, keep an eye out for a full report in the September-October edition of Megastar.

2016 July Country Run to Yanchep

West Perth was crawling with Mercedes-Benzes on the morning of Sunday 24th July, as scores of members and their loved ones arrived in Parliament Place for the July Country Run.

Following a short address by Club President Trent Chellingworth, vehicles fell into formation and proceeded north, embarking on a coastal cruise via West Coast Drive.

A brief coffee break in Mullaloo was welcomed, and as temperatures gradually rose from the 1.3°C overnight minimum, members shed their scarves and jackets to enjoy clear skies and some rare winter sun.

Back on course, vehicles then cut inland to Old Yanchep Road, where 21 kilometres of sprawling countryside lied ahead.

Next stop… Yanchep National Park, where lunch was served at the historic Yanchep Inn.

An impromptu vehicle display was also kindly approved by the publican, creating an eclectic display of members’ vehicles on the lawn.

Many thanks to those who attended, and MBCCWA Events Coordinator Natasha Hunt for arranging yet another great day!

2016 June Coffee Run to Mean Machines

A new addition to the Perth motoring scene is Mean Machines, located in Morley. Our club took the opportunity to make use of the facilities for our June coffee run.

Meeting at the usual place of our clubrooms in Como, approximately 25 members cruised in convoy across the inner-eastern suburbs of Perth, to the somewhat industrial location of Mean Machines. Waiting for us was a fantastic café and restaurant, where the vast majority of our members devoured a coffee or two, while perusing the amazing array of motoring memorabilia and Mean Machines merchandise available.

Once we had taken it all in, our tour guide for the evening, Keith, took us across the road for an exclusive look at their showroom of classic cars. Part of the Mean Machines business is restoring and selling classic cars, in addition to providing a retail space for vehicles on consignment. A rare South-African assembled R107 450SL flew the Mercedes-Benz flag, which stood amongst such classics as Model A Fords, Porsche 928s, Borgward Isabellas, Triumph TR4s and Rolls Royce Silver Shadows, to name but a few.

It was great to see such an enthusiast driven place pop up in Perth and we’ll certainly be back!

2016 Country Run #2 to Greenhills – Sunday 29th May

From the brisk morning air and sunshine at Parliament Place, to the iconic red dirt of the WA countryside – this was the second country run of 2016.

The gathering in the early hours of Sunday morning saw countless beautiful Mercedes-Benz arrive which was testament to the vast array of classic and modern models in our club. From a 1960’s 280SL, through to an imposing W100 600 (the admiration for which could be clearly heard up and down the street upon its arrival!) and the latest CLS Shooting Brake, CLA45 AMG and C200. In between were some fantasitc examples of well-loved models including the W126 560SEL & 560SEC, R129 500SL and of course the W124 diesel!

Setting off for a nearly two-hour journey, the cars rolled out in convoy taking a direct route via Great Eastern Highway, leading them to Mundaring for a short half-way stop. Participants had a quick chance to grab a coffee before the stream of cars pulled out, on their way to Greenhills.

Upon arrival, the open car-park opposing the Greenhills Inn provided a magnificent area to showcase the cars, with the charming pub in the background. With 35 people in attendance for lunch, it was certainly a lively atmosphere and a great day was had by all. We can’t wait for the next country run!

2016 Classic Car Show

Run yearly for well over 25 years, the Classic Car Show at Whiteman Park is the Council of Motoring Clubs’ premier event. With an anticipated 800+ cars, it is always a great show and well worth the trip to Whiteman to view such a wide range of cars.

Once again, the weather wasn’t on our side, but that didn’t stop 9 of our members displaying their cars, including a freshly restored W113 280SL and a beautiful Pine Green 350SL, also fully restored. At the other end of the spectrum, a very original green W116 280SE was on display again this year, proudly displayed by it’s one and only owner who picked the car up from the factory in Germany in 1978!

The show features cars from Austins to Vauxhalls, Alfa Romeos to Volvos and everything in between. It’s a great show and we are extremely proud to support it and represent the three-pointed star!

April Coffee Run – Tuesday 12th April

We seem to have developed a habit of organising events when it rains…

…but that doesn’t stop us getting our cars out and using them for what they were built for: driving! It looked like winter had set in on the way to our meeting point at our South Perth clubrooms, but a short break in the rain allowed us to gather around in preparation for the short run across town to the coastal destination of Clancy’s Fish Bar in City Beach. Taking in the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel, the drive across the western suburbs was a low speed cruise in convoy.

Clancy’s had a spare table or two to accommodate the 25 members and partners in attendance, however the darkness had set in outside so unfortunately we have no idea what the view of the ocean is like! Members of all ages attended this event and it’s great to see that our favourite subject manages to unite folks from such a wide variety of backgrounds.

Fish and chips was the order of the night, which made sense at a fish pub on the ocean, and what was served up certainly didn’t last long on anyone’s plate. Delicious!

Our coffee runs are a great informal way to get to know members, so if you haven’t attended one yet, make sure you keep an eye on our calendar for the next one. See you there!
