2016 Country Run #2 to Greenhills – Sunday 29th May

From the brisk morning air and sunshine at Parliament Place, to the iconic red dirt of the WA countryside – this was the second country run of 2016.

The gathering in the early hours of Sunday morning saw countless beautiful Mercedes-Benz arrive which was testament to the vast array of classic and modern models in our club. From a 1960’s 280SL, through to an imposing W100 600 (the admiration for which could be clearly heard up and down the street upon its arrival!) and the latest CLS Shooting Brake, CLA45 AMG and C200. In between were some fantasitc examples of well-loved models including the W126 560SEL & 560SEC, R129 500SL and of course the W124 diesel!

Setting off for a nearly two-hour journey, the cars rolled out in convoy taking a direct route via Great Eastern Highway, leading them to Mundaring for a short half-way stop. Participants had a quick chance to grab a coffee before the stream of cars pulled out, on their way to Greenhills.

Upon arrival, the open car-park opposing the Greenhills Inn provided a magnificent area to showcase the cars, with the charming pub in the background. With 35 people in attendance for lunch, it was certainly a lively atmosphere and a great day was had by all. We can’t wait for the next country run!

2016 Classic Car Show

Run yearly for well over 25 years, the Classic Car Show at Whiteman Park is the Council of Motoring Clubs’ premier event. With an anticipated 800+ cars, it is always a great show and well worth the trip to Whiteman to view such a wide range of cars.

Once again, the weather wasn’t on our side, but that didn’t stop 9 of our members displaying their cars, including a freshly restored W113 280SL and a beautiful Pine Green 350SL, also fully restored. At the other end of the spectrum, a very original green W116 280SE was on display again this year, proudly displayed by it’s one and only owner who picked the car up from the factory in Germany in 1978!

The show features cars from Austins to Vauxhalls, Alfa Romeos to Volvos and everything in between. It’s a great show and we are extremely proud to support it and represent the three-pointed star!

April Coffee Run – Tuesday 12th April

We seem to have developed a habit of organising events when it rains…

…but that doesn’t stop us getting our cars out and using them for what they were built for: driving! It looked like winter had set in on the way to our meeting point at our South Perth clubrooms, but a short break in the rain allowed us to gather around in preparation for the short run across town to the coastal destination of Clancy’s Fish Bar in City Beach. Taking in the Graham Farmer Freeway tunnel, the drive across the western suburbs was a low speed cruise in convoy.

Clancy’s had a spare table or two to accommodate the 25 members and partners in attendance, however the darkness had set in outside so unfortunately we have no idea what the view of the ocean is like! Members of all ages attended this event and it’s great to see that our favourite subject manages to unite folks from such a wide variety of backgrounds.

Fish and chips was the order of the night, which made sense at a fish pub on the ocean, and what was served up certainly didn’t last long on anyone’s plate. Delicious!

Our coffee runs are a great informal way to get to know members, so if you haven’t attended one yet, make sure you keep an eye on our calendar for the next one. See you there!

2016 German Car Day – Sunday 20th March

Wow! We’re still reeling from German Car Day last Sunday! Approximately 240 vehicles participated throughout the day, with a wide range of interesting makes and models, old and new, being represented.

After receiving a short briefing in East Perth, the convoy set off on a 120 kilometer route down Kwinana Freeway, Mundijong Road and South Western Highway, before winding along the beautiful Del Park Road towards Dwellingup.

Upon arrival at Dwellingup Oval, participants enjoyed a range of German-esque cuisine and live entertainment by Bavarian-themed band Alpen Duo.

Did we mention the weather was also stupendous?

In the afternoon, Event Coordinator and MBCCWA President Trent CHELLINGWORTH took the mic, announcing the following raffle prize winners:

  • First prize – Sanctuary Golf Resort weekend escape to Bunbury (valued at $425) – Duane BUCKENARA
  • Second prize – Swissvax Australia detailing package (valued at $250) – Brett BAIRSTOW
  • Third prize – Citro Bar & Restaurant voucher (valued at $100) – Stephen HIASLEY
  • Fourth prize – MB Centre service voucher (valued at $100) – Glenda BERRY

All of the winners coincidentally drove Bayerische Motoren Werke vehicles, but rest assured that no bribe money was taken from them!

Thankyou to everyone who supported this event, including corporate partners Diesel Motors Mercedes-Benz, Swissvax Australia, Sanctuary Golf Resort, Citro Bar & Restaurant, MB Centre, Cafe2U Australia | Malaga, WA, Anton’s Bratwurst, El Aleman Loco, Perth Langos Factory, Alpen Duo, The Milky Monster, Draws Your CarEspresso On The Go, St John Ambulance WA and Shire of Murray.

A sincere “danke schön” also goes out to the 26 Mercedes-Benz Car Club of Western Australia club members who selflessly volunteered to assist throughout the day. Without their help, this event simply would not have succeeded!

This event was proudly operated by Mercedes-Benz Car Club of Western Australia, with proceeds going to Wheels For Hope.

See you in 2017!

Mid-Week Run – Thursday 3rd March

Once again Bev Margetts arranged a fantastic mid-week run, but this time with a twist.

With the help of fellow member Rick Oswald, Bev arranged a scenic cruise through the canals of Mandurah, followed by lunch at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing & Sailing Club.

25 members first gathered at Lo Quay Cafe in Wilson, prior to driving directly to the Mandurah Harbour, to park our cars in a specially prepared display area outside the MOFSC. We quickly boarded our vessel, which was to take us on a cruise for approximately 90 minutes through the mansions of Mandurah.

Following the cruise and back on dry land, the members tucked into the delights of the club restaurant. Rick treated us to a game of Heads or Tails, a favourite of the Fishing & Sailing club, with the prize taken out by Douglas Davenport. The stars must have perfectly aligned to allow our President and Vice-President to both be available on a work day to attend this event and by all accounts this will certainly not be the last time they use some holidays to indulge in a mid-week run!

2016 New Members’ Breakfast – Sunday 7th February

This perennial event takes place in early February to not only mark the beginning of another year brimming with exciting events, but also to welcome the members that have joined us over the past 12 months.

Members gathered at Parliament Place in West Perth early in the morning in preparation for the breakfast. This venue is one of our favourite gathering places, providing a fantastic backdrop for our cars to line up on display. A very short trip through the picturesque Kings Parksoon followed, which lead us to the site of the breakfast – Beaton Park in Nedlands.

66 members and their families attended the day to feast on a full cooked breakfast. Massive thanks go out to John, Shirley & John Jr Hall for their preparation, planning and cooking which made the morning such a success, even more so considering the 40°C conditions on the morning! The waterfront setting was perfect for members to not only gather and catch up with old friends, but of course meet and welcome the new arrivals.

A big thanks must also go to Bev & Lloyd Margetts for manning our merchandise tent for the morning, serving up some bargains to members new & old.

With another fantastic event now over, it’s time to look forward to what else is in store for this year! Click here for the full list of events.

1st Country Run of 2016 to Mercedes-Benz Bunbury – Sunday 17th January

Twenty five club members met in West Perth on Sunday the 17th of January, setting off on Kwinana Freeway for MBCCWA’s first event of 2016.

After a short pitstop at Miami Bakehouse in West Pinjarra, vehicles continued along Forrest Highway carefully moving through the horrific scenes left by fires which recently swept through WA’s south-west.

After some light drizzle and a smooth 180km drive, members arrived at Mercedes-Benz Bunbury where staff were standing by to serve up a real treat, in more ways than one!

A great range of demonstration vehicles, including the all-new GLC, GLE, C and S-Class were on display with the lovely Ebony on hand to assist with members’ enquiries.

Several vehicles from a local private collection (including vintage and various AMG Black Series models) were also on show, causing quite a stir amongst members.

Last but not least, members enjoyed refreshments and a delicious barbecue lunch, proudly provided by Mercedes-Benz Bunbury.

Given the devastating scenes witnessed en-route, members also reached into their pockets and generously donated to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund, sending $645 in aid of the Waroona and District Fires Appeal 2016.

A massive thank you must go to Steve and his team at Mercedes-Benz Bunbury for their generous hospitality, plus those members who kindly donated to aid efforts in Waroona.

2016 Calendar is now live!

The committee met in October to discuss next year’s calendar of events and refined it over the last month or so. We are now proud to present our full year calendar of events and we hope there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

This year we’re including several Country Runs, which will have us gather in the city on a Sunday morning before taking a 1.5 to 2 hour drive to a country destination for lunch. We’ve got some great destinations planned so keep an eye on these pages for more up-to-date information!

To keep with the theme of drives, we will be replacing a few of our monthly meetings with Club Runs, following the same format as our traditional November Coffee Run. These events will be on a Tuesday night and gives the members a great excuse for a night time cruise and a catch-up over a coffee.

It is sure to be a fun-filled year and we look forward to seeing as many of you out and about as possible!

MBCCWA Christmas Party – Tuesday 8th December

On a pleasant Tuesday evening, at our clubrooms at the South Perth Lawn Tennis Club, some 45 members joined in the festive celebrations to look back on what has been a year of progress, success and enjoyment for our club.

Members started arriving just after 7pm, bringing with them plentiful amounts of food for us all to savour. In addition, members Phil Smythe and John Seman cooked up an excellent feast on the barbecue, in between some minor gas-bottle issues.

Inside, President Trent Chellingworth addressed the members, recounting the years events and giving some hints as to what we can expect in the year ahead. Vice President and Membership Secretary George Kopsen then gave an overview of the club from a membership perspective, highlighting the immense growth in not only raw numbers, but also the level of membership engagement as well. It’s great to see more and more faces around at events!

Following on from dinner, Max Blank (our past-president Paul’s eldest son) helped Trent draw the winner of the Christmas raffle. Diesel Motors had kindly donated the present this year, which was a fantastic Mercedes-Benz picnic hamper featuring a two-place setting made of porcelain and willow. This beautiful prize was taken home by the lucky winner Joseph Kraszlan, with the second place car detailing kit going to Peter Tuck. The final prizes of a Mercedes-Benz poster and an MBCCWA travel mug were taken by our Secretary Todd Cooper and new member Kevin Little.

Members stayed on well in to the evening, thoroughly enjoying themselves and each-other’s company. We hope everyone had a great night and from all of us at the Mercedes-Benz Car Club of WA, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and have a prosperous New Year. See you in 2016!

Metro Drive Day – Sunday 6th December

Our final vehicular event of the year was a short drive to a venue within the metro area for a morning tea. On what turned out to be the wettest December day in Perth for 54 years, the turnout of 14 cars was testament to the dedication of our members.

After meeting at Parliament Place in West Perth, the group left at 9am for a 40 minute run around Perth’s outer ring road, braving several heavy downpours on the way to reach our Swan Valley destination, the Margaret River Chocolate Factory. A grassed area had been cordoned off for our cars to be on display, which showcased the variety of cars including sedans, coupes, wagons, roadsters and SUVs.

Even though the blustery conditions suggested indoors would be the best place to spend the morning, we braved the outside deck area of the venue to enjoy a little seasonal indulgence, with some members just sampling the chocolate products and others going for a full breakfast.

A great drive, great food and great company. What better way to spend a Sunday morning?
